Having sailed at multiple different MWR sailing locations this location makes it (by far) the most difficult to rent a sailboat. The Navy, by nature, is a transient career and I would have expected to be facilitated in said transience more amiably. I have every qualification a sailor could have through MWR. I have raced in numerous offshore races, and races like the New York Yacht Club Annual races in Newport, RI. 100 dollars for a check ride is insane. Seems like a way to pad their bottom line, granted the facilities are above average. A check ride is pretty normal but again, with the transience and for searching for a quick sail on a weekend and not having an instructor available during the weekend also seems odd. Policies of this location need to be adjusted. Staff is somewhat friendly.

Marina staff support to slip patrons this winter has been excellent, from walking the docks and conducting boats checks during inclement weather to providing quick and reliable updates on water outages during cold spells. The small chandlery is stocked with all the simple necessities from toilet paper to boat lubricants that save runs to distant marina stores. Staff is always helpful and cheerful to assist. Restroom facilities are kept clean and stocked in spite of on-site modernization construction.

This place is a scam. I waited a year to finally get a checkride. yes i am not very flexible due to my job but you would think, since this is on a navy base, and since most sailors do not have flexible jobs, that they are more helpful. no. anyways I finally made it and they called me and I said yes and they mentioned a written test and then the checkride and that it would cost 100$. I pointed out that english is not my first language and that I learned how to sail in a different language. I was told this should not be a problem, to review my basic terms and that the test, if you sailed before, is super easy. Now I showed up, paid upfront and was given a four page test with pretty in depth vocab and stuff. I did not pass the test and this test was not easy. I got told to come back at a later time and that I would have to pay 100$ again if I wanted to retry. What makes this so much worse is that at any other Marina on a US Navy base I have been to before scheduled checkrides no further out then a week FOR FREE. very dissapointed.
