Just left this office to reapply for KidsCare for my kiddo. Interacting with the system itself is awful - not receiving letters in the mail they claim to have sent, case numbers not working over the phone so you can’t actually talk to a person unless you go in person, etc. We were denied renewal due to a bureaucratic reason, which I was able to find out today because I could talk to a person, and that agent helped me reapply and get the correct documentation for income to meets what the agency needs. The agent was also extremely kind and helpful in this stressful situation, and from just hearing little bits of conversation around me it sounded like this was how ALL the agents were. This is very different than my experience coming here a couple years ago. My agent at that time was not necessarily rude in a way I could complain about, but they weren’t really sensitive either - coming for assistance is stressful due to bureaucracy, it comes with emotional baggage, and it feels awful if you feel reduced to a number instead of a human being. It’s also scary when you get denied and you’ve jumped through all the delicate hoops required by a system that never really gives you all the info you need upfront. And I’m no beggar, I run a small business and HAVE to get KidsCare for my kiddo because we do qualify based on income - and if I add him to our ACA Marketplace plan, we will lose our premium assistance! If you qualify for state assistance and you try to pay for marketplace coverage, they will make you backpay any assistance you get on premiums. So I am not legally allowed to bypass this stressful situation that I have no visibility to how it works or anything. I’d avoid it if I could but I can’t. Anyway, the agent today was both kind and competent, so they made an awful situation that has dragged out for a month and a half now much less stressful - I now have confidence that all the paperwork has been filled out correctly and all the right documentation has been provided. Thank you!!!

I had an extremely difficult experience at the Union Hills DES office. My SNAP case has been stuck for weeks, and this was my second visit with no answers. I met with Lisa at cube 8, who was dismissive and showed no empathy at all. I am a parent trying to feed my daughter, and I left the office in tears after being told “You can leave now” when I asked for some understanding. I did not raise my voice or act disrespectfully. I just needed help. No one should be treated this way when they are already struggling.

As far as government buildings goes I'll give this 5 stars. I went on a Tuesday at 9am (which supposedly is the slowest time to go) I only waited 20 minutes before I was called up. Took about 30 minutes to redo my application. Didn't end up qualifying for anything but thankful I didn't have to waste multiple hours on it.

Debbie was so sweet and helpful. The process was very quick and everyone there from security, to the person who checked me in, to Debbie helping me were kind and patient. Thank you Debbie, your calm and kind demeanor honestly made my day!

On 08/27/2025 Came to this office because my nutrition assistance funds were not de eposited and needed to know why and am homeless And can't call. While I was waiting to be called the two very rude and very aggressive security guards there assaulted me. They both hit me on my knee separately because my eyes were closed. They never attempted to talk to me like a regular human being and ask me if I'm sleeping and or not to keep my eyes closed. Because I am homeless and a little more dirty then others there they felt they could physically harm and threaten me. THIS IS NOT OK. DES SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES. people go there for help and these two thugs are physically harming people they judge as LESS THEN. I Know nothing will be done about this, but I had to let some one know. I hope my fellow citizens that can't go to a safer office will read this and be on their gaurd so as they are not harmed, harassed and embarrassed in a room full of peers simply because these two gustopo "security" guards decided to pass judgement on me. Every one stay safe and may God bless all of you out of whatever turnmoil you may be going through.
