We recently went on a school excursion organized by Ventura Travel Agency, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the experience. From start to finish, everything was exceptionally well-organized and thoughtfully planned. Our travel guide, Harun, was outstanding, professional, approachable, and incredibly efficient. One of the things that stood out the most was how flexible and accommodating the agency was. Any time we requested a change or adjustment during the trip, it was handled immediately and without any complications or need for long explanations. This level of responsiveness made the entire experience stress-free and enjoyable for both students and staff. We are very satisfied with the service provided by both Harun and the Ventura team, and we would highly recommend them to anyone planning a group or school trip.

They might be more expensive than most agencies, but at least you get to say you slept on a stained mat in a sex hotel. That’s the short version. If you want more details, keep reading. The Positives 1. Exceptional Local Guides: • Kumiko – Hands down the best guide we had during the trip. She’s lived all over Japan, adapts quickly to unexpected changes, and adjusted the schedule to give us the best possible experience. • Elma – A Bosnian living in Japan. I only had one excursion with her, but it was well-organized and professionally executed. 2. First Hotel: Comfortable beds, spacious rooms, and although it was located on the outskirts, it had great subway access. The Negatives 1. Misinformation and Poor Communication: We were told we’d receive all important travel information in advance. A few days before the trip, we were asked to enter our travel companions’ contact numbers—information they already had, and the itinerary we were given was already available on their website. The Japan-related information we did receive was mostly incorrect: • Time difference listed as 9 hours (it’s 7). • Claimed Viber doesn’t work in Japan (it’s owned by Japanese company Rakuten). • Every “Passenger Rescue” notice on trains indicates a suicide (it refers to someone feeling unwell). • Offered to provide train apps and SIM cards for those who needed them. No one got a SIM, and we used physical IC cards like the locals. Tour schedule changes were poorly communicated. Example - we skipped Tokyo Tower tour day and went on our own, only to find out later it had been added to our itinerary. 2. Financial Transparency Issues: • Hidden fees: We asked Ventura about potential extra charges for optional trips (as other agencies had warned about such costs for shrines). They assured us everything was included. In the end, we paid 5–10 euros per shrine—significant when it adds up. • We were not refunded for a canceled cruise. Instead, we were casually told, “Don’t worry, you can go by yourself tomorrow.” • No financial compensation, or even an apology was offered. • We paid the oversized baggage fee on the bullet train but were never told where to store our luggage. We figured it out ourselves—on the return trip. 3. Disorganization and Unprofessionalism: • We were told by email and in person that we could bring two bags: an 8 kg carry-on and a 30 kg checked bag. In reality, the checked baggage limit was 23 kg. One traveler had to rearrange luggage at the airport. • We weren’t given enough time to review optional tours. When we asked which ones others had selected, they told us, “Everyone chose all.” 3 of 9 people did. • Messages and images were sent late at night, waking people up. • Our main guide forgot his bag on a train—with both his and his girlfriend’s passports, his laptop, and all our bullet train tickets inside. He never sent us digital copies, even though we asked for them. Our local guide had to help him recover the bag while paying travelers had to wait for the tour to start. • Our main guide got us lost, then brushed off concerns with, “Well, I’m not a Japan tour guide.” He did apologize for this at the end of the trip. • He said he was “counting the hours until going home” several times —not a great way to boost group morale. 4. Return flight Our international return flight had a 1-hour layover after a 12.5-hour journey. The first leg was delayed, and we had to spend an unplanned night in Turkey. This was avoidable. 5. The “Love Hotel” Incident: Four of us were promised two double rooms. In Osaka, we were put in a “Love Hotel” (a Japanese sex hotel) and given: • One bed, a small couch with a thin mattress, and two chairs pushed together to form a... not a bed. When contacted, the guide offered his room—then quickly changed his mind after I didn't refuse his suggestion. He later suggested we negotiate with the Japanese-only-speaking hotel staff instead. I ended up sleeping on the floor on a stained mat. Final Thoughts Did this ruin our vacation? No, we were in Japan, mostly on our own. Did Ventura do the bare minimum? Nah.
